HESSE, Emma

Emma Hesse was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

After graduating from the Ontario College of Art, she had a successful career in graphic design. In 1990, she moved to a small farm near Peterborough, Ontario, where she devotes her free time to painting images that are both constant and have personal significance for her. In each work she explores the layers of detail and memory, and with the rhythmic process of laying down paint, clarifies her thoughts, until the painting is complete and the memory is crystalline.

Emma has participated in numerous exhibitions all over Canada, including the Whistler Village Art Gallery, Whistler, Alberta; Peterson Fine Art in Toronto, The Shayne Gallery, Montreal, and at the Hart House in Toronto.

Emma Hesse's paintings are reproduced on the covers of several novels published by McClelland and Stewart, including “The Underpainter' by Jane Urquhart, and three works by Margaret Drabble. She is a founding member of The Millbrook Gallery, Millbrook, Ontario.
