Earls Court Gallery is excited showcase new paintings by award winning Canadian artist Laura Culic in her new exhibition titled “Gratitude & Reciprocity.”

“Gratitude & Reciprocity” showcases 20 paintings that highlight Culic’s process driven artistic practice. Culic’s approach includes a combination of vigorous scrubbing, scribbling and movement of paint alternating with contemplative, thoughtful editing and meditative consideration. This process results in brightly expressive artworks that meander between the genres of abstraction and representational landscape.

Laura Culic describes her relationship with the land and art process further,

“I have a deep affinity to the land and paint in response to my powerful emotional connection to the lakes, forests and wild, rocky landscapes of Canada, as experienced in my travels. Merging abstract and representational, my expressionistic work evolves from impressions of the beauty of light and the natural world that I absorb and carry, obtained through many hours of observing and moving through the land; hiking, riding, observing, and just being.”

Artist's Statement

I have a deep affinity to the land and paint in response to my powerful emotional connection to the lakes, forests and wild, rocky landscapes of Canada, as experienced in my travels. Merging abstract and representational, my expressionistic work evolves from impressions of the beauty of light and the natural world that I absorb and carry, obtained through many hours of observing and moving through the land; hiking, riding, observing, and just being. Process driven and multilayered, my approach is a combination of vigorous scrubbing, scribbling and movement of paint alternating with contemplative, thoughtful editing and meditative consideration. The work involves building up multiple layers of oil paint and beeswax, combining brushy application of thinned paint with thicker applications using painting knives, blades and various drawing materials. In this exploration in mark making and layering I am repeatedly adding and subtracting; concealing and revealing, in a process akin to nature’s cycles of erosion and decay, growth and renewal, I work to capture the spirit, atmosphere and energy of the natural world.
