Biography
This Post-Impressionist watercolour scene by the painter and illustrator Marius Hubert Robert (French 1885-1966) depicts a Quebec farmer and team in a mid summer day filled with light and shadow. The Orientalist style endeavours to capture the treatment of light and colour in a more illustrative manner versus the more natural depiction of light and colour of the Impressionists. Creating a serene grandeur, this style remained throughout a career spanning over five decades as a painter and illustrator.
It was likely painted during one of the sponsored trips taken through Canada and the US during the 1920’s. The trips were funded by the Astor family. This came following service as a war artist in WW1. Two of these WW1 paintings are in the Musee de Luxembourg, Paris.
Coming from an artistic family spanning four generations, Marius Hubert received many exhibitions and honorary; The National Gallery of Canada, Musee de Quebec, Musee de Orsay, Paris and many exhibitions throughout the world including Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
