ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

By A Lady: A Historical Survey of Women Artists in Hamilton, 1860–1970 explores the vital contributions of women artists who helped shape the cultural and artistic identity of Hamilton and the surrounding region for over more than a century. Through paintings, drawings, etchings, sculpture, and archival material, the exhibition aims to recognize both celebrated and overlooked artists whose artistic practice, artworks and influence created the foundation of Hamilton’s vibrant art scene today.

The exhibition’s title is drawn fondly from the book By a Lady by Maria Tippett—a landmark publication examining the history and challenges faced by women artists in Canada. Such notable Hamilton artists as Laura Muntz Lyall, Hortense Gordon, and Edna Taçon are a few featured in this publication.

The "By A Lady" exhibition is dedicated to unearthing hidden artworks by notable female artists from private collections and showcasing them to the public to reinforce these artists significant contributions. Further, Earls Court Gallery seeks to foster renewed appreciation, scholarship, and collecting interest in the women who helped define Hamilton’s artistic legacy.
