Clarence Porter

I was using one of Monet’s paintings - “Water Lilies” - as an example of the use of analogous, complementary and discord colours, when a student (let’s call her Colleen) asked if Monet or any of the Old Masters used colour wheels to determine their painting colour schemes. I was not certain of the answer. That sent me on a search for the colour wheel’s origin, its uses, and its users, and oddly enough my search circled back around to the fact that Monet was one of the first Old Masters to use the colour wheel. Examples: the “Waterloo Bridge” series, the “Rouen Cathedral” series, the “House of Parliament” series. That is why I now call my intermediate/advanced pastel course “Let’s Get Creative Like Monet”.
