Lesia Mokrycke’s new paintings explore light through layered abstraction, evoking a primordial garden—once a place of refuge, solitude, and order—that has begun to unravel. In this body of work, the garden frays at its edges, producing moments of beauty amid uncertainty and disarray. The paintings oscillate between the real and the imagined: fragments of a home, a window, or a field briefly emerge before being absorbed back into the wider landscape.

Mokrycke’s bright, intuitive interplay of color and her loose, layered handling of paint create tension between surface and depth, reality and imagination. Her freehand approach to drawing with paint generates dynamic color fields that feel both expansive and intimate. While her use of color and gesture recalls the legacy of Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell, Mokrycke’s compositional restraint aligns her work with the pared-down, structural sensibility of Robert Motherwell. Together, these influences form a painterly language that is expressive, dynamic, and quietly resolute.
