Intervals Between Colour

Earls Court Gallery is pleased to present Intervals Between Colour, an exhibition featuring the work of Dara Aram, Katharine Kennie, and Nancy Benoy. Inspired by Josef Albers’ colour theory “Color Intervals and Transformation,” the exhibition explores colour as something experienced through relationship—with other colours, forms, materials, and spaces.
For Albers, colour is never entirely fixed. Its appearance and effect can change according to the colours that surround it which create relationships of contrast, harmony, tension, and transformation. Each artist presented in Intervals Between Colour share distinct approaches to demonstrate how colour can shift perception and create meaning through its relationships with other compositional components.
Dara Aram’s atmospheric paintings consider the intersections of colour, nature, memory, displacement, and the human experience. Katharine Kennie builds layered paintings inspired by the patterns, structures, and rhythms of the natural world, allowing colour and texture to accumulate over time. Nancy Benoy explores colour through play and experimentation, combining saturated pigment, line, and form across painting, assemblage, and sculpture.
Together, the artists invite viewers to consider colour as active rather than static—a force that changes according to what surrounds it and what it encounters. Intervals Between Colour asks us to look beyond individual colours and to pay attention to the spaces between them: the moments of contrast, transformation, harmony, and tension where perception itself begins to shift.
Intervals of Colour will be on view in the main gallery at 215 Ottawa Street North, Hamilton, from October 8 through November 14, 2026. Earls Court Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. All artworks will also be available to view online upon installation.

About the Artists
Dara Aram
Dara Aram is a Toronto based contemporary painter who has studied fine art at the Suleymani Institute of Fine Art in Kurdistan and at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Canada. Since 1980, Aram has painted and created installations. Artists, since time immemorial, have conveyed their message with images rather than logical, linear statements. Dara Aram’s art does precisely this. It is a journey into the imaginary realms of the unconscious. The abstract forms and mythological themes that emerge on his canvas serve as an inspiration to modern industrialized man, who urgently needs to reconnect with his lost soul. This soul lies languishing under the weight of our modern, cold, corporate world where profits and statistics reign supreme over the human spirit. Humanity needs desperately to find spiritual security in this mechanized epoch of globalization. Over the past year, Dara’s impassioned search for meaning has found hope and inspiration in the motifs of Mesopotamian history and mythology. Mesopotamia, from the Greek meaning “between two rivers,” is the fertile land flanked by the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers. Also known as the “Cradle of Civilization,” it, today, clearly maintains a vital and crucial place in the destiny of humankind. Aram has exhibited 75 solo and group shows world wide in galleries and museums, including Japan, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the UK, Middle East and North America. He has received numerous grants and awards. Also, he has been interviewed by newspapers, magazines and TV. Aram’s works are in private and public collections such as the Canadian Embassies in Denmark and in Sweden. Mr. Irvin Zuker, a prominent art collector from Hamilton, Ontario and well known Canadian artists Leonard Cohen and Doris McCarthy and Mayor of Richmond Hill Mr. Dave Barrow and York Regional Chief of Police Mr. Armand P. La Barge own Aram’s works. He has donated numerous works to charities and cultural events. He has lectured and taught at a number of colleges, universities, elementary and secondary schools.
Katharine Kennie
Katharine Kennie is an oil painter living and working in Grey County, ON. Born and raised in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, she studied visual art and music in Eastwood Collegiate's high school arts program and continued on to study visual art at the Ontario College of Art & Design University in Toronto. Studies in OCAD's painting, printmaking, and fabrication departments enhanced Katharine's interest in the qualities of handmade objects. While maintaining a part time drawing and painting practice throughout her 20's, Katharine perfected a new range of skills in a cabinetmaking apprenticeship and made her living in the woodworking industry. Past work has included building furniture and smaller wood projects, sculpture, stained glass, printmaking and digital illustration. This cross disciplinary work has heavily influenced the way Katharine makes her paintings with an eye toward simplicity, quality materials and workmanship. After moving to rural Ontario in 2014, Katharine has maintained a full time studio art practice with a focus on observational work from daily life and deeply exploring the local landscape she lives in.
Nancy Benoy
Nancy Benoy is a self-taught artist and educator in Hamilton, Ontario. Nancy’s practice spans over 20 years. Her art and teaching practices are rooted in self-expression, experimentation, process and joy. Materials play an integral role: saturated inks, luminous watercolours, rich acrylics, found objects, and natural resources speak to her and find their voice in her works. Compositions are captured in an abstract manner. Nancy advocates for art in the community, facilitating accessible, playful, and process-based art workshops in the Hamilton area, including Dundas Valley School of the Art and Art Gallery of Hamilton. She was nominated for the City of Hamilton Art Educator award and co-recipient of the City of Hamilton Arts Champion for her podcast “ArtToGo.” Among other spaces, her work has been shown at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Riverdale Art Walk, Supercrawl and has work in private collections in Canada, the US, and the UK.
