  • Artist Statement

    WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON

     

    This body of work is mostly about the particular quality of light between night and day and about how the atmosphere moderates what we perceive.

     

    Vapour, precipitation and light often obscure or distort features of the urban landscape. Refracted light acquires volume and expands into darkness. And a shining light creates distorted shapes in shadow and silhouette.

     

    My work is also about drawing, mark making and texture.

     

    While oil pastels are available in dozens of colours, it’s always necessary to make new ones. I do this by scribble-hatching one or more hues together until I find what I need. I frequently begin with an underpainting in tempera paint or soft pastel, then draw over this underlying colour stain with oil pastel.
