    William Blackwood was born on the 26th of march, 1892 at holly bank, Kilcreggan, Dunbarton, Scotland. He was the son of James Blackwood and Marjory Davidson. William Blackwood married Ethel Matilda Stroud, daughter of William Stroud, on July 19th, 1918, at Newbury, Berkshire. Blackwood was a well-appointed and experienced painter. During the First World War, he served in the Canadian overseas regimental force, 1915. His brother James was also part of the regiment. In 1918 he was posted as a soldier / guard at the 4th general hospital, Basingstoke. He immigrated to Canada, and arrived at Quebec on the 4th of September, 1927, on the ship "Athenia." member of the Canadian Overseas Regimental Force, 1915 no. 946. Blackwood painted frequently in northern Ontario.
