Kenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013) is one of the most celebrated Inuit artists, whose printmaking helped bring Inuit visual culture to national and international prominence. Birds Over the Sun exemplifies her poetic graphic language, depicting soaring birds silhouetted against a warm sun in a composition that is both joyful and lyrical. This particular print is noted to only be acquired at the cooperative and not distributed to other galleries. Printed using the challenging sealskin stencil technique, this image reflects her mastery of form, movement, and contrast, drawing on motifs central to her work. Ashevak’s bold and imaginative depictions of birds and natural elements have become iconic within Inuit art, influencing generations of artists and expanding appreciation for Arctic artistic traditions.
