Leo Angotingoer is an inuit artist. He sculpts, among others, Inuits fishing or hunting, with a stone called basalt.
Basalt is a black volcanic stone. It is also the hardest stone from Nunavut to sculpt with. Therefore, Leo Angotingoer’s carvings are characterized as simple and primitive. However, the details in his pieces reveal a meticulous work and attention to the features a well as to the movements of the subjects representedin Leo’s sculptures. Sometimes, Leo Angotingoer adds caribou antler to his piece.
